Wagenborg Passenger Services and Next Generation Shipyards have signed the construction contract for a new Wadden ferry. This vessel, which strengthens the connection between Ameland and Holwert, is an important step in improving Ameland’s accessibility.
The new passenger ship accommodates 75 passengers and responds to growing demand. With it, Wagenborg Passenger Services invests in a safe, reliable and future-proof connection.
The construction of the ship is being carried out by NG Shipyards, with Northern Netherlands subcontractors. This project contributes to the local economy and employment.
The design is tailored to the Wadden Sea and provides improved sailing capabilities even at low water levels. With efficient engines and a new type of water jet, the vessel is energy-efficient and meets the most stringent emission requirements, reducing CO2 emissions per sailing by 50%. The ferry is also prepared for biodiesel and can later be converted to fully electric propulsion.
The ship features modern navigation tools, an advanced positioning system and offers additional comforts such as USB-C charging points and more luggage space. The new Wadden ferry will be delivered in late 2025 and will be commissioned in early 2026.
